Ever since Nintendo surprised fans last year with the launch of Mario Party and Mario Party 2 on its online service last year, fans have been wondering when the last of the series’ N64 entries would show up. At the time, Nintendo said that Mario Party would come to the service some time during the following year…and proceeded to say nothing else about it. Well, it’s been almost exactly a year since then and fans have gotten the long awaited news at last: Mario Party 3 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online on Friday, October 27.
Just like how Mario Party 2 made many important improvements over the first game, so too did Mario Party 3 improve on the sequel. It brings over seventy new mini-games to the table; offers six new boards; increases the number of items players can carry and grants more game customization options, the most important of which being the ability to more precisely set the number of turns.
Mario Party 3 also features the series’ first single-player story mode as well as Duel Mode, a 2v2 mode entirely unique to this entry. Playing through single-player mode at least once is sort of required for those who want to unlock the Waluigi’s Island party map, the Backtrack duel map and the Stardust Battle minigame. After that, well it’ll always be there for those who just love playing Mario Party.
Getting Duel Mode back is definitely a win for longtime fans of the series though. Despite offering a genuniely different (albeit kind of rough) way to enjoy Mario Party, the mode was never seen again after it was introduced in Mario Party 3. Rather than go for stars, players instead try to wittle down each other’s HP. They cannot attack themselves though.
