2023 has been a stellar year for Nintendo, with highly anticipated new releases like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launching on Switch and the Super Mario Bros. movie setting box office records earlier this year.
As a result, Nintendo’s hybrid platform has managed to keep its sales momentum going despite this year likely being the last full year without a new successor. Per the Japanese developer’s latest financial reports ranging from July 1 to September 30, 2023, Nintendo shipped an additional 2.93 million Switch units, bringing its grand total up to just shy of 132.5 million. This puts the platform just 21 million units behind Nintendo’s best-selling device to date, the DS, and 22 million behind the best-selling console of all time, the PlayStation 2. With Black Friday quickly approaching and limited time Switch bundles being offered for the holiday season, there’s still plenty of time remaining this year for Nintendo to continue increasing those numbers.
On the software side of things, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been an expected juggernaut, selling an additional 1 million copies in the past quarter to raise its total up to 19.5 million. Pikmin 4 also had a solid launch in its own right, with 2.5 million copies sold to make it the best-selling Pikmin game ever. While the latest major first party Switch release was not counted as part of the recent fiscal results due to the game’s release on October 20, Nintendo has separately reported that Super Mario Bros. Wonder has sold 4.3 million copies in its first two weeks, making it the fastest-selling Super Mario game yet.
