Back in 2018, former DICE CEO Patrick Soderlund and chief creative officer Rob Runnesson broke away from the Battlefield developer to start their own indie team, Embark Studios.
At the Game Awards 2021, they unveiled their first project, ARC Raiders, a third-person extraction shooter where multiple teams of players worked with and against one another to take on giant machines. While that game was originally scheduled to be their debut title, ARC Raiders was ultimately delayed beyond 2022, and seems likely to miss its 2023 release window as well despite holding closed playtesting back in the summer. Fortunately, Embark Studios has also been hard at work on a second multiplayer title, which was first revealed in August of last year. Known as The Finals, this squad-based competitive FPS tasks players with surviving a deadly game show and escaping with the largest payout. Multiple closed betas have been held for the shooter on PC, where players have come to appreciate the impressive destruction mechanics that have often played a large role in the Battlefield series.
Now, The Finals is finally ready to make its console debut with the announcement of a cross-play open beta on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC that was made during today’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase. Starting October 26 and running through November 5, the open beta will offer new modes and maps that weren’t previously available in any of the game’s closed betas. In addition to the close quarters of Monaco and the tall skyscrapers of Seoul, players can take the action to the all-new Skyway Stadium, which will shift and evolve as the match goes on to keep players on their toes.
