PlatinumGame's once cult-hit NieR: Automata has, since releasing in 2017, become a commercial success, in any way you cut it. Still fondly remembered and with no sequel or successor in sight, publisher Square Enix has revealed that the philosophical action game has passed the impressive 9 million copies sold mark.
Considering it took around 10 months to move the first million (and that across PS4, Xbox One, and PC), constant praise and admiration for auteur creator Yoko Taro on social media and forums ever since have allowed for an impressive number of lifetime sales (thanks, Gematsu). A Game of the YoRHa Edition followed in 2019, and with the release of a Switch version in 2022, the series had shipped over 7 million physical and digital copies. A collaboration with Stellar Blade in 2024 kept the franchise in the public conscience and undoubtedly accounted for some additional Automata sales.
