Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Will Film on Siciliy’s ‘Goat Island’
Christopher Nolan‘s will be an expensive production, and according to a recent report from Variety, will spend some of its time in Sicily, on an island that shares history with the iconic story the film is based on.
According to Variety’s report, the upcoming movie is set to begin production soon, and will film in part in Sicily, namely on the island of Favignana. The island was known as Aegusa in ancient times, which roughly translates to the “goat island” in Greek.
The island is also infamous for being the location for where Homer was believed to have envisioned Odysseus landing with his crew in The Odyssey. The crew stop on the island to pick up food and also goats, for which the island was alleged to be known for at the time.
Variety’s report notes that some of the movie will also be filmed in Sicily’s Eolian islands, but Favignana will be where the “bulk” of the movie’s time in Sicily will be spent.
Previously, it was announced that Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway would all also star in the upcoming project. Early reports suggest that Pattinson, Damon, Holland, and Hathaway will make up “the core leads” of the movie. Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya, both of whom were recently reported to be in the project, will also have supporting roles to some degree, as will Charlize Theron.
“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” Universal said about the upcoming film. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
The Odyssey is one of two ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, a Greek poet who is also credited as the author of the Iliad and who is often seen as one of the most influential and important authors in human history.
