A new threat is emerging on the Automaton front in , and it may be significant enough to turn the tide of battle. Arrowhead Game Studios' third-person co-op shooter has excelled as a live-service title through its ongoing story, in which players are embroiled in the Galactic War as Super Earth's elite Helldiver units. So far, the Helldivers have seen more success than failure, but a new Automaton enemy could put Super Earth's latest offensive in jeopardy.
After successfully dispensing a chemical compound known as Termicide to cull the bugs' forces, the Helldivers' attention has turned toward the opposite side of the galaxy map in what is being called Operation Swift Disassembly. This latest stage of the Galactic War is spanning multiple Major Orders, each tasking players with penetrating deep into Automaton territory to cripple the machines' primary war assets. The ultimate goal of Operation Swift Disassembly is to destroy the Automatons for good, but a new enemy type coming to may complicate matters.
The first phase of Operation Swift Disassembly had players liberating a planet called Troost. Once this was accomplished, a dispatch was disseminated to all Helldivers notifying of the successful decommissioning of the Automatons' Comms Array, which was revealed to have been broadcasting into deep space. Among the intercepted transmissions, however, were apparently blueprints for an Automaton aerial gunship, seemingly a new enemy type for .
To make matters worse, the subsequent Major Order to liberate Tibit – a prominent site of Automaton fabrication – came alongside word that plans for an Automaton counterattack were also intercepted, and that Helldivers should expect increased enemy resistance on the bots' remaining controlled planets.
