Marvel Comics' Moon Knight originally had a generic and unappealing origin story which the publisher eventually retconned. First appearing in Werewolf by Night #32, Marc Spector was a hired gun who was given the costume, gear, and title by his employers. Despite the hilarity of acknowledging how ridiculous he looks; his popularity saw Marvel continue the character allowing his backstory to be further fleshed out. In time, his origin story had become completely rewritten by gradually introducing elements and characters such as the god Khonshu, while also maintaining his past and present continuity.
In the story by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, Jack Russell lives a tormented double life, barely able to control or remember what the Werewolf by Night does once the Moon triggers his transformation. With his last transformation having left his best friend Buck Cowan in a coma and his niece Buttons seriously traumatized, the remorseful Jack returns home to find a masked man adorned in white waiting for him along with his stepfather.

The man who introduces himself as Moon Knight admits that he’s a working man simply there to collect a payday. His origin story, told in flashbacks, reveals he was tipped off about a job and met a group of mysterious men called the Committee who overlook his resume. Impressed with Spector’s diverse military training and background, they hire him while providing him with his costume, the weapons, and the title to catch the werewolf known as Jack Russell for thirty thousand dollars.
Originally, one can understand why Marvel would change this origin as it does little to make Marc Spector stand out as anything less than ordinary.
