The newest vigilante fighting crime in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is unlike any we’ve ever seen. Harnessing the power of the Egyptian moon god Khonsu, Marc Spector transforms into the heroic, yet violent, hero Moon Knight. But while most superheroes deal with the internal conflict of living double lives or protecting their secret identities, Spector has a much more complicated issue.

From an early age, Spector has exhibited symptoms related to dissociative identity disorder, more commonly associated with having split personalities. As he grew older, Spector would begin exhibiting another personality, which forced his parents to send him to a medical facility. It seemed Spector would eventually gain somewhat of a hold on his condition, until the fateful night when he became Moon Knight. Many different personalities have formed within Spector, so buckle up and let’s dive into the fractured mind of Moon Knight.

First, there was Marc Spector. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Spector was the firstborn son of a Jewish rabbi. When attending school, Spector’s younger brother, Randall, would get bullied for being Jewish but Spector would protect his brother. Their father resented the violent nature of Spector, but his mother praised him for fighting against people that would cause him or his brother pain. Later on, Spector discovered that another rabbi named Yitz Perlman, who was a close family friend, was actually a Nazi deserter and targeted Jewish people. Spector fought against Perlman and protected his family, but it was this incident that ultimately caused the beginnings of his dissociative identity disorder.
