Caution: Spoilers ahead for Moon Knight episode 5
Moon Knight episode 5, «Asylum,» just copied an emotional story trick from WandaVision. Disney+'s slate of original Marvel shows has undoubtedly taken a deeper look at their characters’ motivations during Phase 4 of the MCU, with Hawkeye further exploring the complexities of Clint Barton's (Jeremy Renner) time as Ronin on his psyche. However, no Disney+ MCU show has explored its protagonists more emotionally and impactfully than both Moon Knight and WandaVision to date.
In Moon Knight episode 5, Marc Spector and Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) are heading into the afterlife, guided by the goddess Tawaret. To gain entry to the afterlife, their hearts must be balanced, and to gain that balance, they must travel through Marc’s traumatic memories, watching each moment unfold until it is clear how Steven Grant and Marc Spector came to exist together. The death of Marc’s brother, abuse at the hands of his mother, and Marc’s near-death experience in Egypt are all accounted for here, forming an understanding of the onset of Marc’s Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and how Marc’s and Steven’s lives began to bleed into one another’s.

Yet Moon Knight episode 5 repeats a story trick used in WandaVision’s episode 8, «Previously On,» as Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is taken on a journey through her memories by Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) to understand how Wanda’s powers manifested. Wanda is forced to relive the bombing that killed her parents, the experiments performed by Hydra scientists on her, and her grief for both her brother and Vision (Paul Bettany).
