Apple’s M3 Pro occupies the center position of the company’s newest silicon family but has been criticized by multiple outlets over its lackluster performance gains over the M2 Pro and having a lower memory bandwidth than its predecessor. However, after a series of tests conducted by a YouTuber while comparing it to the M1 Max, Apple’s ‘middle of the pack’ 3nm SoC touts incredible value, but only if you are upgrading from a MacBook Pro that is two generations old.
The binned version of the M3 Pro featuring an 11-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 18GB of unified RAM, and 512GB of NVMe storage running in the latest MacBook Pro was tested by Vadim Yuryev while getting compared to the M1 Max. Though it was not a complete domination by Apple’s latest 3nm SoC, the M3 Pro managed to beat the M1 Max in the majority of tests, including Geekbench 6’s single-core and multi-core CPU results, along with Lightroom Classic, Figma, and others.
Of course, Apple made certain compromises, starting with the SSD of the latest MacBook Pro, as the newer machine achieves slower read and write speeds compared to the M1 Max model. However, both versions do not feature the same storage amount, with the M3 Pro MacBook Pro kitted with a 512GB SSD, whereas the older one sports a 1TB one. The M3 Pro also struggles in video and image export tests, with the M1 Max MacBook Pro beating it in Final Cut, 8K ProRes Raw and Canon R5 4K.
In the last test, the M3 Pro’s MacBook Pro fans are running nearly double the RPM, indicating that the cooling system must work harder to achieve a similar result. Overall, the M3 Pro is a decent chipset and can also offer extended battery life, but if you stumble upon an M1 Max MacBook Pro deal that is significantly cheaper, that is a
