Lucasfilm’s Willow reboot has one major advantage over Star Wars. Released in 1988, the original Willow stars Warwick Davis as a budding sorcerer who must protect the baby destined to bring down an evil queen. Based on a story by George Lucas, the movie taps into the mythological sources of inspiration that helped make Star Wars a global phenomenon. However, Willow disappointed both critically and commercially, with a final box office closer to Howard the Duck – the Lucasfilm movie commonly listed amongst the worst of all time – than The Empire Strikes Back.
Set to premiere on Disney+ on November 30th, 2022, Willow’s sequel series will see Davis return to the Mother World alongside new faces, including Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). On the face of it, the original movie’s low profile would seem to threaten the follow-up show’s chances of success; indeed, amongst a slate of upcoming Lucasfilm projects, Willow is overshadowed by bigger-name titles like Andor and Star Wars: The Bad Batch. However, Willow’s relative obscurity actually gives it a surprising advantage over future Star Wars stories.

Crucially, Willow’s low profile means that viewers won’t come to the sequel series with unrealistically high expectations.
