With the release of a handful of first-look images for Amazon’s upcoming series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, sharp-eyed fans were quick to pick out a few details which didn’t seem quite right, most notably in the armor of Galadriel. There are a few things in the photographs from the new prequel show which feel out of place, such as dwarf women not having beards and elf men not having long hair. The most ire, however, rests on the depiction of Galadriel, shown wearing a suit with a star emblem emblazoned on the breastplate. That particular style of star looks a lot like the star of the House of Fëanor, a symbol which Galadriel would never wear.
Rings Of Power is set a thousand years before the events of Lord Of The Rings, familiar from the historic book and movie trilogy, drawing inspiration from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. Rather than adapting the entire epic history of Middle Earth, with its dense history and myth, Rings Of Power is an original story set around the time of the Last Alliance between elves and men, in the era when the rings themselves were forged. It’s an ambitious idea which, if well-executed, would explain the background behind most of the conflicts in the famous movie trilogy. There’s some cause to be optimistic, with the Tolkien Estate having had a hand in the show’s production, insisting on a five-season contract before permitting it to be made at all. It’ll likely be aimed at viewers familiar with the movie series, but some of the reaction has been concern over how faithful the story will be to the lore of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
