As part of Summer Game Fest, a trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria debuted and a new release window for the title was announced. Additionally, the game has been confirmed release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC via the Epic Games Store. All versions of the game launch on the same day.
The survival-crafting game was previously scheduled to debut during Spring 2023 and now it's set for release during Fall 2023. Return to Moria is in development at Free Range Games, which assisted with the development of The Callisto Protocol. The game takes place in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth (after the events of the movies) and has players controlling a company of dwarves who are trying to reclaim treasure from Moria. You can get a closer look in the video below, which is narrated by none other than John Rhys-Davies, who plays Gimli in the movies.
Return to Moria is set in a procedurally generated world, and Free Range says no two instances will be the same. The game supports solo play and co-op.
Return to Moria is one of a few upcoming Lord of the Rings games in development. Others include a new Lord of the Rings title from Weta's gaming division and a new Lord of the Rings MMO from Amazon Games. For more, check out GameSpot's rundown of all the new Lord of the Rings games.
The latest major Lord of the Rings game was The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment.
