During Chapter 3 of 's story, players have the chance to complete a substory quest called The Mochi Mystery for optional rewards. A comedic tale about stolen dessert, this mission forgoes combat and instead asks players to use context clues from a list of suspects to expose a thief. A far more lighthearted tale when compared to the dark atmosphere of the main story, this quest offers a fun diversion from the main adventure while also giving players Virtue and a special item for solving the mystery.
Substory 06, The Mochi Mystery, may be found once protagonist Sakamoto Ryoma can pass through the large gate in the game's third chapter. Located in Shinmeicho in Rakunai, players are able to spot a group of six men arguing in one of the alleyways between the streets of 's feudal Japan setting. Approaching them to see what the fuss is about leads Ryoma to meet a Doshin samurai who enforces the law, as they ask the player to help them solve this recent crime.

Players learn quickly that two cakes in total have been stolen, with five suspects lined up that they must question to gather information. Each individual has one line of dialogue that players are told when Ryoma interacts with them.

While players are not required to provide responses like the Global Fraud substory answers in , they should keep in mind what details line up when accusing certain characters.
