The depth behind the world of comes from the collection of characters players are able to meet and form bonds with, in certain locations. These relationships might be optional for players to pursue, but each provides additional substory content that expands on the people protagonist Sakamoto Ryoma meets. Players not only gain a better understanding of the lives of other people with these built relationships but also receive rewards for pursuing these bonds to their conclusion.
There are two types of bonds players are able to find, both called Friendships, divided into either individuals or shops. Ryoma has a chance to interact with over 48 total bonds and complete tasks associated with their goals, acting as side quests of sorts. Many of these bonds serve as a great way for players to farm money in , as well as other loot or new items for shops. Plenty of bonds exist to explore during all sections of the main story, so players should always be on the lookout for opportunities to establish new connections or chances to level up pre-existing friendships.
