Diablo veterans are no strangers to corrupted holy places in their journeys through Sanctuary — but never before have players been able to experience a taste of the depraved beauty in real life. Blizzard, in collaboration with MJZ director Henry Hobson andBaroque artist Adam Miller transformed the Chapelle des Jésuites de Cambrai in Cambrai, France into the Cathedral of Diablo in an epic project — bringing the themes and visuals of the franchise alive in a way never before seen.
This ambitious project couldn't have come to life, however, without the right canvas — and the Chapelle des Jésuites couldn't have been more perfect. Completed in 1692, the Chapelle des Jésuites was built on the Place du Saint-Sépulcre in Cambrai, France as an annex to a Jesuit college.
With a long and storied history, including being used as a prison, storage space, and troop barracks, the Chapelle des Jésuites has stood witness to monumental moments in history — even functioning as a cinema during World War I! A historical monument since 1920, the last services in the Chapelle des Jésuites were held in 1931. Officially secularized in 1958, the chapel stands now as a religious art museum — and what better place than that to create a temple brimming with art dedicated to confronting Lilith? Spanning 160 feet and consisting of 20 unique paintings, the Cathedral of Diablo transforms the Chapelle des Jésuites into a darkly beautiful gothic scene ripped from Sanctuary itself.
Taking Miller and his team 30 days to paint, with over 2,400 square feet of canvas, this was no small undertaking — but the breathtakingly beautiful results more than make up for the frantic pace of the project.
