The creator of Legacies has explained how the reappearance of Klaus Mikaelson in the series finale was instrumental in Hope's overall arc. Legacies is the third series in the universe of the Vampire Diaries, following Hope Mikaelsen (Danielle Rose Russell) as she goes to a school for the supernaturally gifted following the death of her father Klaus (Joseph Morgan) in the finale of The Originals. Over Legacies season 1 to 4, Hope has taken after her father, becoming a sort of prickly anti-hero struggling with deep-seated issues.
In the middle of season 4, The CW announced that Legacies would be ending during a huge swath of cancellations that claimed nearly a dozen series. Although the announcement was abrupt, the show's creators were given advance knowledge that the end might be coming, so the team was able to craft a Legacies finale that tied up their loose ends. This included a cameo appearance by Morgan's Klaus, who was able to connect with his daughter from beyond the grave through the power of a projection screen.

Plec argued that Hope's entire character, including her "inability to love too fully or act too freely" is informed by her father's death, and not being able to conclude that part of her story would have failed her growth as a character. «Hope had been carrying such tremendous survivor’s guilt. It has informed everything about her — her inability to love too fully or act too freely.
