Two executive producers of Legacies have confirmed that more series from the universe of The Vampire Diaries are currently in development. The franchise began with the Vampire Diaries series of young adult novels by L.J. Smith, which followed a high school student falling in love with an immortal vampire and was adapted by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec into a series on The CW in 2009. That show ran concurrently with the 2013 spinoff The Originals, which followed the group of original vampires who began their respective bloodlines, until The Vampire Diaries went off the air in 2017. The Originals ended the next year, at which point it was followed up by the Julie Plec series Legacies, which followed a school for supernatural youth.
The Vampire Diaries universe, also known as the TVDU, has held pride of place on The CW for 13 years until late April 2022. Following a chaotic period in which the company was being put up for sale and the shows that hadn't already been renewed were kept on the bubble for an extended period, the network took the axe to a huge swath of series, including Riverdale, Dynasty, Roswell, New Mexico, and the Arrowverse series Naomi, Batwoman, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Although the showrunners were able to prep a story that could wrap up the series, the season 4 finale, which was set to air shortly afterward on June 16, had suddenly become the series finale of Legacies instead.
