has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth movie.
In December 2024, Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider reported that Eggers had closed a deal to co-write and direct a sequel to 1986’s Labyrinth, which was directed by Jim Henson and stars Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie.
There’s been little news about the project since then; however, Deadline is now confirming the news.
Eggers is writing the project with Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, better known as Sjón, who he previously collaborated with on 2022’s The Northman. It was also recently announced that Eggers is making a new werewolf movie, titled Werwulf, which he’s also co-writing with Sjón. That film has a December 25, 2026, release date from Focus Features.
Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce Eggers’ new Labyrinth movie alongside Lisa Henson, while Brian Henson serves as an executive producer.
Plot details for the film remain under wraps at this time. It’s unclear whether or not Connelly will reprise her role as Sarah Williams.
A description of the original Labyrinth movie reads, “Sixteen-year-old Sarah is given thirteen hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother Toby when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King Jareth.”
Eggers made his feature film directorial debut in 2015 with The Witch, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson. He followed that up with 2019’s The Lighthouse, featuring performances by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, before he then went on to make The Northman. His most recent film is 2024’s Nosferatu, which stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlock and Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hunter.
A release date for Eggers’ Labyrinth movie has not yet been announced. The original Labyrinth is currently available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and other streaming platforms.
