Rooney and Kate Mara are set to star in, a new movie from Werner Herzog. Per a report from Deadline, Herzog will write and direct the film. Bucking Fastard marks the first time real-life sisters Rooney and Kate will work together on a movie.
Rooney’s most recent credit was in La Cocina, a 2024 drama from Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios. Before La Cocina, Rooney starred in Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, which won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Rooney’s notable works include 2010’s The Social Network, 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 2015’s Carol, and 2021’s Nightmare Alley.
Kate, two years older than Rooney, has two films set to premiere at SXSW 2025: The Dutchman and The Astronaut. Kate also has a voice role in Prime Video’s Invincible. Her recent TV credits include Class of ’09, Black Mirror, and A Teacher. Kate’s film career spans over 25 years, appearing in movies such as 2007’s Shooter, 2015’s Fantastic Four, 2015’s The Martian, and 2018’s Chappaquiddick.
Herzog is one of the most influential filmmakers of German cinema. Herzog is an actor, writer, filmmaker, documentarian, author, and opera director. Bucking Fastard is Herzog’s first directed feature since 2019’s Family Romance, LLC. Herzog has made several documentaries since then, including 2020’s Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds, 2022’s The Fire Within:
Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft, and 2022’s Theatre of Thought.
Per the logline, “Bucking Fastard is based on the true story of inseparable twin sisters Joan and Jean, who live on the fringes of society.” It is unknown which sister Rooney and Kate will play.
Producers include Andrea Bucko and Emanuele Moretti of Cobalt Sky Motion Picture Group, Ariel Leon Isacovitch, and Agnes Chu.
Production is slated to start this spring in Ireland and Slovenia.
