Not a whole lot is known about the upcoming third entry in the Avatar series, titled . However, director James Cameron did note that the film won’t be afraid to take some brave choices.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Cameron said that the third film plans to take audiences “places they won’t expect, but that will feel earned,” and said that the team behind movie won’t be afraid to make some “brave choices.”
“We’re just starting to riff on it and twist it and turn it,” Cameron said. “It’s a tricky thing. We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it goes, ‘F–k, that’s not what I signed up for.’ But if you’re not making brave choices, you’re wasting everybody’s time and money. That alone is not sufficient to create success, but it’s necessary. You’ve got to break the mold every fricking time.”
Cameron also teased that, perhaps unsurprisingly, there would be some “clever action set-pieces,” a staple of the past two films. Not a whole lot is known about the upcoming movie, but we do know that Avatar: Fire and Ash will also introduce the ‘Ash Clan,’ who are led by a character named Varang, played by Oona Chaplin.
“Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She’s hardened by that,” Cameron said. “She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil. One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic. We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm.”

Cameron also said Chaplin is “so good” in Fire and Ash that he “didn’t quite appreciate how good her performance is until we got the Wētā animation back…She’s an enemy, an adversarial character, but [Chaplin] makes her feel so real and alive.”
