Insecure writer Phil Augusta Jackson hopes his new show Grand Crew leads to more Black content on television. Jackson, who is known for his writing onInsecure andBrooklyn Nine-Nine, brings his sitcom expertise to act as showrunner for his newest show Grand Crew. Jackson also serves as executive producer for the new series alongside Dan Goor, who worked with him on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Grand Crew premiered in December 2021 on NBC.
Grand Crew follows a group of friends in L.A. who gather at a wine bar to recap their lives for each other. The series stars Nicole Byers, host of Netflix's Nailed It!, Echo Kellum, known for his role on Arrow, and newcomers Justin Cummingham, Aaron Jennings, Carl Tart, and Grasie Mercedes. The group is lead by Nicky (Byers), a driven real estate agent who is adventurous in love, and her brother Noah (Kellum), who falls in love too easily. The siblings' friends include Wyatt (Cummingham), the happily married one of the group, Anthony (Jennings), a dedicated vegan focused on his job, Sherm (Tart), an unemployed genius, and Fay (Mercedes), the newest member of the group who works at their favorite wine bar.

Grand Crew follows the pattern of Jackson's previous project Insecure by boasting a cast led by talented Black actors. In an interview with Shadow and Act, the Grand Crew showrunner shared that while he didn't create the series with the intent of «filling a void» in representation, he was happy the show could offer positive representation for the Black community.
