The Steam Deck is right around the corner, so Valve has unveiled a program that will tell you what games in your library are compatible. All you have to do is login and your collection will be filtered.
By going to this link, scrolling down, and signing in, you can see what games will work. But there are four stages of verification to keep in mind - Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Verified means it'll work "right out of the box" while Playable might require some tweaking on your end to get it working. Unsupported means, as you probably guessed, it won't work, while Unknown is a gamble. It might, but it also might not.

For a game to be verified, it has to fit four different categories. It needs full controller support, default resolution support (1280x800 or 1280x720), no compatibility warnings, Proton support, and anti-cheat. If it ticks all four boxes, it gets a neat little green checkmark. Otherwise, it has a grey crossed-out circle, yellow exclamation mark, or a dotted question mark.
If you press the icons, you'll get further details. For instance, as shown on Steam's website, Team Fortress 2 is Playable, not Verified. Clicking the icon reveals that SteamOS can run the game, its default configurations runs well on the Deck, the text is legible, but some functionality requires touchscreen and doesn't work with the in-built controller.
You can see all this detail before you buy, letting you know whether a game is worth grabbing for your Deck. But the first page on the store will only show Verified games, anyway, so you can't accidentally buy a bunch of titles that won't work. They're listed under the "Great on Deck"
