Warning! SPOILERS for HIMYF episode 4.
Although How I Met Your Father’s core basis is HIMYM, the sitcom also copies one of Friends’ greatest features in building its main characters’ connections. How I Met Your Father’s cast and characters depict the relationships, friendships, and misadventures of a group of 30-somethings friends in New York City, which is the exact formula of both HIMYM and Friends. Interestingly, HIMYM’s 2005 series was long considered a spin on Friends’ premise, as the latter sitcom had just ended in 2004. Naturally, as How I Met Your Father repeats HIMYM, it’s bound to take some of Friends’ greatest qualities as well.
How I Met Your Father follows Sophie (Hilary Duff) finding the love of her life in the year 2022 after meeting a new slew of characters in the pilot, while Future Sophie (Kim Cattrall) tells her son the story of how she met his father in 2050. Sophie’s story begins when her roommate/best friend Valentina brings home wealthy British exile Charlie from fashion week, and she soon meets music teacher Jesse, bar owner Sid and his fiancée Hannah, and new-to-town recently divorced Ellen when she has an Uber mishap on the way to a Tinder date. The six characters quickly become a solid group of friends, with many of their dynamics and relationships repeating those of HIMYM.
