I Want You Back pairs a great cast with a script that knows just what makes a compelling romantic comedy. Jenny Slate (Saturday Night Live, Obvious Child) and Scott Eastwood (The Fate of the Furious) are putting in some of their best dramatic work without sacrificing a single joke. The always reliable Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) has had an up and down movie career in contrast to his ultra-successful run on TV, but I Want You Back is a keeper. Similarly, Manny Jacinto was one of the best parts of NBC’s hit The Good Place and he makes the best of his biggest film offering to date. Writing duo Isaac Aptaker (This Is Us) and Elizabeth Berger (How I Met Your Father) made a point to make the relationship dynamics real, even if the premise is a bit bizarre.
When Peter (Day) and Emma (Slate) are dumped at the same time, they find each other crying about their respective breakups in the hallway of the office building where they both work. After they fail at a cigarette-fueled pity party they become fast friends in need of companionship. A drunken night together leads them to come up with a diabolical plan to win back their exes. Peter becomes friends with Emma’s ex, Noah (Eastwood) and tries to remind him that Emma is special. Meanwhile, Emma is trying to break up Peter’s ex-girlfriend Anne (Gina Rodriguez) by seducing her new boyfriend Logan (Jacinto). The plan goes surprisingly well, but with one heartbreaking consequence.
