Everyone and everything is on Discord these days, it seems, and one of the reasons for that is rooted in Final Fantasy XI. Yes, the two-decade old MMORPG.
Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy told Famitsu (translated by Siliconera) in an interview, that while he was still in school, he wanted a convenient way to voice chat and spend time with friends all playing Final Fantasy 11. So he started working on a prototype for this understandable issue for MMORPG players in the earlier years. Later, he met co-founder Jason Citron when they worked together at GREE and the rest is history, as they say.
It's a fun story behind one of the most ubiquitous apps most of us open up on a daily basis, and so central to where many of us get our updates. Discord has replaced social media and forums for some games, though sometimes, it’s just the first place they release new info.
You'll be unsurprised to find that Vishnevskiy continued his love of Final Fantasy MMORPGs and has been an active Final Fantasy XIV player since 1.0. Not only does he have a legacy mark tattoo, he also has most jobs at level 100. He also took a week off for Dawntrail’s launch and has changed over to a Pictomancer main.
All of us who hop on Discord on a daily basis owe a little something to Final Fantasy and, of course, a love of MMORPGs with friends.
