In a recent video from the YouTube channel Did You Know Gaming, it seems that there were numerous things that were cut from the quarter of a century old Metal Gear Solid entry. Known for wanting to inject a lot of interesting ideas, Easter eggs, or fourth wall breaking aspects, Kojima has said that he originally wanted the game's protagonist to be able to keep pet rats. The story goes, according to the video, that seeing as rats play a fairly significant role in the game, the Japanese director wanted them to be even more important.

He said that rats added a sense of reality, with the possibility of letting players name individual rats There's actually a reference to this in the fourth game, in which Snake, during an optional codec conversation, refers to the rats as his «friends.» There was also a rat-based Easter egg in the game as well. However, like a lot of cut content from other Metal Gear Solid titles, the extra significance of the rats was removed before the game was published.
