Phantom Coast has announced their arcade skateboarding roguelite Helskate, a game that blends Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater with hack and slash action and a demonic underworld. It’s coming to PC in Early Access later this year.
THPS is a real touchstone for Helskate, especially as Game Director Steve Swink worked on Tony Hawk’s Underground back in the day. There’s the same arcade skateboarding sensibility that remains so moreish to fans of the genre, but it now marries that to hack and slash action and a roguelite loop.
You play as Anton Falcon, trapped in the afterlife of Vertheim, who just wants to skate. Unfortunately the world is filled with monsters who will do everything the can to break his combos, ruin his run and send him packing like those angry Karen videos you see online.
If you’re defeated, you’re sent back to a place where you can spend the resources that you collected on tattoos or skateboards that provide you with weapons and offensive abilities to fight back.
“The development of Helskate has been very exciting for us from the early days, as we tried to figure out what are the most fun ways of introducing combat and roguelike aspects to a skateboarding game.” said Amir Erfani, producer at Phantom Coast. “We tried a few different approaches and landed on a sweet spot that makes the game fun and easy to pick up even by anyone who hasn’t played any skateboarding games before. We are aiming to release on Early Access to continue the development, as the player feedback is essential to the development especially for a perfect roguelike experience.”
