Things are ramping up on the Terminid front in Helldivers 2 as players have discovered giant, ominous tunnels that seem almost endless when dove into. The leading theory right now is that these are being dug by the Hive Lords, bugs from the first game who are so powerful that they can break through a planet's crust.
Some players even report hearing growls coming from the holes.
Players also found the remnants of moulting Hive Lords, backing this theory up, while the towers which were erected to contain the Terminid in the first place are now coated head to toe in bug matter (thanks, GamesRadar). All of our efforts to contain the horde have clearly failed. Things are only going to get worse from here, and what's worse than an enormous, near-unkillable sandworm?
Given how narrow the tunnels are compared to the Hive Lords in the first game, some fans speculate that we're only dealing with younger bugs at the moment.
Maybe we'll have a chance to stop them before they grow too big, but developer Arrowhead could be slowly building up to the reveal of adult Hive Lords, capable of wiping out an entire Helldiver army. We're gonna need a lot more firepower.
Spoilers for Helldivers 2 follow.
Earlier this week, dataminers uncovered footage of an exploding planet, seemingly the Terminid super colony Meridia. It could be that, because of the rising Terminid threat - with sandworms burrowing under our feet and winding intricate tunnels for their bug brethren - we'll have no choice but to destroy the entire planet to stop the threat from spreading.
Leaker IronS1ghts also uncovered a "Dark Fluid Containment Device" which will be used in the "Dark Fluid Research Station" objective. This will likely be used to create whatever weapon is capable of destroying an entire world - fans even speculate that we'll devise a black hole to devour Meridia from within. At any rate, if the two are connected, those Hive Lords are shaping up to be one of the biggest threats we've faced
