Arrowhead Game Studios has revealed the Helldivers 2 – Escalation of Freedom update, the biggest update for the game so far, which will be coming out next month on 6th August
Escalation of Freedom will add a lot to Helldivers 2, bringing larger enemy outposts than ever, new and returning enemies for bots and bugs, new mission objectives and a new top tier of difficulty: Combat Rating 10.
One of the most eye-catching new enemies is a returning monster from the original Helldivers, the Impaler, which sprouts tentacles out of the ground and does plenty of stabbing. There’s also the Spore Charger, which comes with a movable cloud of fog. Meanwhile the Automatons now have an artillery tank that can fire a barrage up and over to attack you. In general, there’s also other variants of other enemies to test yourself against.
Tier 10 will be the new top difficulty, but there will also be new supersized enemy camps and fortresses, which will be a real challenge to take on but promise even more high-end rewards: Super Samples. New mission objectives like Retrieve Larvae channel a bit of Death Stranding, but with larval cries bringing more swarming Terminids to you.
Helping to add more visual variety is a spookier version of the swamp planet, acid storm weather effects will also drain enemy armour as well as yours.
There’s more surprises waiting players on 6th August, but Arrowhead is also promising to fix and mitigate some pesky bugs and issues. A system to address kicking to grief will be implemented, so any player that is kicked will spawn into a new session as a host with all the team’s loot available to be picked up personally before extraction, though it’s still going to feel pretty crappy if someone kicks you from their party at the last moment.
