Hawkeye was originally going to be a much different show, but how the Disney+ Marvel series eventually turned out was the best outcome for both the titular character and the MCU as a whole. The only founding member of the Avengers without a solo film, Hawkeye was an obvious choice for receiving a Disney+ series, especially after the offscreen changes the character had gone through during the five years following the snap. On top of better developing Clint Barton, the Hawkeye show was also chosen as the MCU debut of Kate Bishop, and the interactions between the Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld characters were one of the reasons why Hawkeye became a different show from what the MCU had originally planned.
After being absent from Avengers: Infinity War, Clint Barton received a lot of focus in Avengers: Endgame. Thanos' snap through the eyes of Barton, who had to watch his entire family turning into dust right in front of him, was the opening sequence of Endgame, and it set the tone for what the rest of the movie was going to be. Barton was revealed to have become the Ronin, a cold-blooded vigilante who was involved in the deaths of dozens of criminals. While he eventually rejoined the Avengers for the time heist and the Hulk's snap brought everyone who had been killed by Thanos back, Clint Barton's actions as Ronin were now something that would follow the character forever.

This darker path that Barton's character took was going to be carried onto Hawkeye, which was originally set up to be a lot more focused on Clint Barton himself, and how he was handling the demons from his recent past after the decidedly traumatic events of Avengers: Endgame. While
