In some of the earliest days of the Avengers, Captain America gave Hawkeye some tough love during training that helped shape the archer into a better hero. In New Avengers #33 from Marvel Comics, the story flashes back to one of the first Avengers teams getting trained by Steve Rogers on how to fight without their powers. When Hawkeye arrogantly states his bow is better than fists, Captain America disrespects his teammate by snapping his hand-made weapon in half.
In the pages of Marvel Comics and MCU, Hawkeye has developed a thick skin when it comes to his fellow Avengers poking fun at his lack of powers, as he's become the butt of jokes among the superteam. Even with his expert marksmanship with his bow and arrows, Hawkeye, at times, isn't taken seriously by both heroes and villains. It's why it was so surprising when Clint Barton became Ronin and embraced his more violent side, as he was the last hero readers expected to ditch his bow and become a different kind of vigilante. However, the reason he was so successful as Ronin is rooted in a disrespectful training session with Captain America where he learned the importance of fighting without his bow.
