The much-mocked Hawkeye has always worked extra hard to make up for his lack of superpowers, but against one villain, the only thing he can do is embarrass himself. Covers for the upcoming Thunderbolts series render Clint Barton’s signature bow and arrow totally useless against a superpowered ape.
Clint Barton as Hawkeye has always been well aware of his reputation as the weakest Avenger. He’s often been forced to prove that he shouldn’t constantly be reduced to that one bow-and-arrow guy, but even with his trick arrows, it’s difficult for him to prove his importance when he’s a member of a group that includes mythical Norse gods and super soldiers from World War II. Despite his abilities paling in comparison to some of his Avengers counterparts, Hawkeye retained his spot on the team. Now, he’s been tasked with leading the Thunderbolts, who are replacing the Avengers as the only lawfully sanctioned superhero groupin New York City. However, new covers show that he might not be up to the task.

Penciler Sean Izaakse recently shared the covers for Thunderbolts #2 and #3 on Twitter, and things aren’t looking too good for Hawkeye. The team is shown attempting to bring down the Red Ghost’s superpowered apes, but the attempt seems to be faring poorly on all fronts. Other heroes at least appear to be making some progress; Clint, on the other hand, is getting absolutely nowhere. Although he’s fired multiple arrows at Peotor the orangutan, the monkey is simply telepathically catching those arrows in mid-air. Hawkeye refuses to give up, but the orangutan has apparently decided that Hawkeye isn’t worth his time and doesn’t even bother to spare him a glance
