Polaroid, the first name in instant photography, is back with a new film that works with both vintage 600 series cameras and new models like Now+. It's part of the ongoing Duochrome series, a type film that swaps the white portion of black-and-white in favor of a uniform color. The film is based on the current-generation monochrome film, but adds colored dyes to the chemistry to achieve its signature look.
The Black and Green film isn't the first of the type from the modern version of the Polaroid company, which had previously released Blue, Orange, Red, and Yellow films under the Impossible Project and Polaroid Originals brand names.
I loaded a pack of the new film into the Polaroid Now+ instant camera, a model that takes both I-Type film and 600 series. The difference between the two types is simple—a battery in 600 film packs powers compatible vintage cameras, so you've got the option to use the Black and Green emulsion with vintage Polaroid 600 cameras and SX70 models that have been converted to use 600 film.
Polaroid says the green color is made by mixing cyan and yellow dyes for a lighter hue, not far off from a Kelly green. The resulting images are pleasing, and feels more natural than the horror-movie Red or Halloween-y as the Orange. There's some personal preference at play there; the yellow and blue films have proven to be my favorites in the series, so it's no surprise that my eye favors a mix of the two.
Black and Green is being marketed as an experimental stock. Polaroid warns that you may see some mottling in images, a result of the mixing of two dyes to create the green color.
