Night In The Woods' Mae Delivers Message Of Pride At Portland Football Match

A recent soccer match (or “football” to literally every other country on Earth) featured a giant banner of Night in the Woods’ Mae Borowski sharing a message of Pride.

For those of you who haven’t played Night in the Woods, it’s a narrative game about anthropomorphic feline Mae Borowski who drops out of college due to her worsening mental health. The game has been celebrated not only for its insightful story about youths and mental health, but also for its incredibly inclusive cast of characters. For example, Mae is pansexual, saying in-game, "I don’t care if they are a boy or a girl! As long as they are like ARRG."

Being the perfect video game character to represent the diversity of both Portland and Pride, fans of the Portland Timbers decided to make Mae the centerpiece of a three-banner message raised during a recent match. "From Stonewall a brick, and Portland an axe," read one banner, while the other said: "Respect our Pride or expect our wrath."

Mae was raised last, showcasing the character with an axe over her shoulder and the pride colors on the axe’s hilt.

Scott Benson, one of the creators of Night in the Woods, caught wind of the video on social media. "Jaw dropped," wrote Benson, adding, "This is the closest I have ever been to being involved in sports.

"I'm pleased that our beloved dirtball from down the block continues to show up in unexpected places, and also that those places are generally very good. Anyway I endorse the message and the implied threat of axe violence."
