Google Maps is stepping up its game by testing a feature that iPhone users have long awaited: Live Activities. This feature promises to bring dynamic and glanceable information directly to the lock screen and Dynamic Island of iPhones, enhancing the user experience.
Live Activities are notifications from apps that provide real-time information on the lock screen and always-on display of iPhones. Apps like Uber and Lyft have effectively used this feature to show updates on pickup and dropoff statuses. While Live Activities have been a staple feature on Android for some time, Google Maps for iOS has been slow to integrate this feature. Google first teased support for Live Activities back in 2023, indicating its plans to implement it for iPhone 15. However, the rollout never materialized, leaving users in anticipation.
Recently, Google has been testing Live Activities on select iPhones. Some fortunate users have reported seeing live directions on their lock screens when using Google Maps for navigation. This feature is versatile, working seamlessly whether you're navigating through public transit or using in-car navigation.

If you're keen to try out this feature, there's a setting you can enable within the Google Maps app. Navigate to the Settings menu and toggle on “Glanceable directions while navigating.” While this doesn't guarantee immediate access to Live Activities, it does increase your chances of being part of the testing phase.
