A major mystery from Godzilla vs. Kong needs to be solved in Godzilla vs. Kong 2. An official title hasn’t been confirmed, but Legendary’s plans to continue the MonsterVerse with a fifth movie are no longer a well-kept secret. Expected to shoot in Australia later this year, a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel is currently in development with Adam Wingard returning to direct.
Story details remain under wraps, but what’s been said about the upcoming MonsterVerse movie implies it won’t be Godzilla 3 or Kong 2. The fact that it’s currently being described as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is a good sign that it’ll continue the stories of both MonsterVerse Titans. A follow-up centered around both monsters feels plausible, as there are multiple ways it could work. It could be a rematch between the Titans, or perhaps a proper team-up where they have to join forces against a new villain.

Regardless of what Legendary plans to do with Godzilla vs. Kong 2, the movie presents the MonsterVerse with an opportunity to finally provide answers about Godzilla vs. Kong’s Titan War mystery. Among the most interesting reveals to come from the movie was the history it established for Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors. Apparently, the two species clashed in the hidden Hollow Earth world for an unknown reason. The novelization touched on their motivations for their fighting and also discussed the results, but the movie itself left what actually happened in the Titan War open to interpretation. Given how integral is to Kong’s backstory and their ancestral rivalry with Godzilla’s species, it’s important that a second movie about the two Titans explores this event properly.
