’s box office starts neck and neck with Sony’s The Garfield Movie. But, both films underperform drastically, sending Hollywood into a frenzy. Furiosa beat Garfield in the first three days by the barest of margins, but the latter could go past the former once the final numbers are reported.
The latest Mad Max: Fury Road prequel was expected to bring in between $40-50 million in its first weekend. But, it only brought almost half of that in the first three days (around $25.6 million), and is expected to make between $31-33 million across the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
While Garfield lost the match-up in the three-day weekend ($24.7 million), its estimates suggest a $31.9 million run over the Memorial Day weekend. It could end up barely winning against Furiosa, but the numbers are still the lowest for Memorial Day since 1995’s Casper, which opened with $22.5 million.
Furiosa’s worldwide numbers currently stand at $58.8 million, while The Garfield Movie has made $98.1 million globally, having opened much earlier in several international markets.
With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga falling way below its initial projections, things look bleak for its worldwide success. Its reported production budget is $168 million, before adding the marketing expenses. If the film continues its box office run at a similar pace, it likely won’t be able to make its money back.
Meanwhile, The Garfield Movie, which also underperformed slightly, could still be a successful venture for Sony due to its reported $60 million production budget. With more families choosing to watch The Garfield Movie, all signs point to its monetary success.
Both Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie will continue to play in theaters across June 2024.
