Before Five Nights at Freddy's had even been released, it made back more than its $25 million budget thanks to the sale of its streaming and theatrical distribution rights. But now that it's in cinemas, it has made a staggering $130 million worldwide in just its first weekend, cementing it as the second-biggest opening for a video game movie, and the biggest opening for a live-action video game movie.
The current top ten list of highest-grossing opening weekends for video game movies after FNAF's release is as follows:
In 2023 alone, it made more in its opening weekend than Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid, John Wick: Chapter 4, Fast X, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Despite Five Nights at Freddy's already being available in the US on the Peacock streaming service, it made $78 million domestically. Internationally, it made $52 million, culminating in the $130 million opening.
While FNAF made back its $25 million budget and released to a huge opening weekend, the film has not gone down well with critics. It has a measly 26 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, landing it the "Certified Rotten" badge.
While the movie is a resounding success, things have been messier at the screenings themselves. Videos surfaced of fans stealing posters, cutouts, and merchandise from cinemas. Some even featured security guards chasing after fans and stopping them at the door before they got away.
