If you've been on Twitter at all this weekend, then odds are you've seen a fair bit of stuff about Elden Ring. Most of that stuff will have been about how great it is. Not only has Elden Ring been labeled FromSoftware's greatest achievement to date, but many are saying it is also the studio's most approachable game so far. A big plus for a Souls game as previous titles have been known for being incredibly difficult.
Early sales data for Elden Ring certainly reflects all of those early reviews and reactions. As revealed by Gamesindustry.biz thanks to GfK's data, Elden Ring comfortably debuted at number one in the UK boxed chart. Impressive in itself, but even more impressive is how much better it performed during its launch weekend than any other Souls game to have come before it.

The previous record-holder in the genre was Dark Souls 3. Elden Ring has bettered FromSoft's last games by 26%, at least when it comes to physical UK sales. GfK's numbers don't account for digital sales but odds are when they are tallied up, Elden Ring will have had an even more successful launch than Dark Souls 3 and subsequently better than any other Souls game that has come before it. Here's hoping it's as approachable, immersive, and gripping as everyone has claimed it to be.
Elsewhere in the chart, Horizon Forbidden West's stay at the top was short as it slips down to number two. It can still boast that its launch weekend was slightly bigger than Elden Ring, though. The PlayStation exclusive and Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which rounds out the top three, are the only two games to have enjoyed better launches than Elden Ring so far in 2022.
