In past Dragon Ball stories and continued through Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta has come a long way from his origins as a villain of the Z Fighters, and right when it seemed like he reverted back to his villainous ways he sacrifices himself in the hopes of defeating a nearly unbeatable foe. However, Dragon Ball Super actually improved on that iconic moment by adding one twist that fans assuredly did not see coming.
In Dragon Ball Chapter 467 titled “Farewell, Proud Warrior” by Akira Toriyama, Majin Vegeta decides to take a final stand against the villainous Buu after so many fighters tried and failed to defeat the foe before him. In an effort to overwhelm the villain with destructive energy as well as atone for all of the evil he himself had brought upon the world recently, Vegeta decides to detonate his body and sacrifice himself while hitting Buu with the fullest extent of his power. Unfortunately, the blast wasn’t enough to kill Buu and the villain made it out of there alive, though Vegeta was still killed in the explosion.

In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 40 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, the Z Fighters have entered the Tournament of Power, including some former villains who have since become allies including Androids 17 and 18 and even Frieza. In this chapter, one of their opponents, Jiren, defeated both Goku and Vegeta, so 17 and Frieza decided to go after him together. However, Jiren proved to be far more powerful than even the two reformed villains put together, so 17 took a page out of Vegeta’s playbook. 17 detonated himself right in front of Jiren, blowing a massive chunk out of the arena in the process.
