Once the player's options for exploration open up in , they must choose which of two pivotal story locations to visit first: Dock Town or Treviso. The player chooses one or the other by traveling through the corresponding eluvian portal in the Crossroads. Each houses the headquarters of an important faction that Rook wishes to partner with: Dock Town is the harbor district of Minrathous, home to the Shadow Dragons resistance, and Treviso is a high-rising city of zip lines and gondolas, home to the Antivan Crows, a guild of thieves and assassins.
Although players will inevitably visit both Treviso and Dock Town during their travels, the choice of which to visit first does make a difference. Each region includes an entirely different quest, entirely different enemies, and entirely different opportunities for advancement, so it's important to understand what the decision means, and prioritize what's most important to the player at the time they take on the quest.
If the player goes to Treviso first, they'll start with a quest called "" that introduces them to the Antivan Crows. Players can only choose one companion for this quest, as the second slot will be occupied by a character they're about to recruit. They meet its leader, First Talon Caterina Dellamorte, to ask about her mage-killer grandson Lucanis. She explains that, despite the rumor claiming Lucanis is long dead, he's actually still alive (if not doing too well) in an underwater prison. She agrees to contract his help in exchange for his rescue.
While Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a revival of the series after a 10-year wait, it also manages to repeat one of the flaws of the previous games.
Rook and their friends then proceed to the prison, where they solve a series of puzzles in which they have to break a series of red crystals powering spectral barriers that prevent their progress.
