Trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have teased that Wanda Maximoff's Scarlet Witch might serve as a villain, but one hint might help the MCU to avoid using a common stereotype. The trailers for Doctor Strange's long-awaited sequel suggest that Wanda will fully become the movie’s primary antagonist. Some theories even suggest she could become a Thanos-level threat for the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4.
The original Marvel comics include some precedence for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the MCU to take this route. In the Marvel Comics “House of M” storyline, a traumatized Wanda used her reality-warping powers to reunite with her lost twin sons, Billy and Tommy. As a collection of heroes fought to dissolve the illusion, Wanda’s mental health deteriorated further, leading her to shout at her father, Magneto, “No more mutants.” In the true reality, mutants began losing their abilities, and the community’s population was reduced from millions to hundreds. While mutants haven’t officially entered the MCU yet, an adaptation of this story based on Billy and Tommy is still possible thanks to the Disney+ show WandaVision. In the series, Wanda created a false reality in Westview, New Jersey, so she could reunite with Vision (Paul Bettany) and eventually gave birth to Billy and Tommy. At the show’s end, Wanda dismantled this reality and left New Jersey to learn more about the chaos magic that allowed her to create the illusion in the first place. The final seconds of the WandaVision finale showed an astral projection of Scarlet Witch suddenly hearing the voice of one of her sons.
