Disney didn't fail to notice how popular life simulation games are and decided to create its own free-to-play experience packed full of Disney characters (and probably microtransactions).
The game is called Disney Dreamlight Valley and development is being handled by French developer Gameloft. Stop me if this sounds familiar, but Dreamlight Valley tasks you with restoring "a once-idyllic village now desolate and full of night thorns after a mysterious event called The Forgetting."
The restoration requires establishing relationships with and working through the story arcs of well-known Disney and Pixar characters to help you solve mysteries, going on quests to harvest materials, carrying out farming duties, and spending coins with shopkeepers for the other resources you require.
The game will allow you to customize the village, create your dream home within it, and pick from "limitless" customization options for the outfits you wear and furniture you acquire. There's also going to be a range of Disney and Pixar-inspired furniture and clothing to choose from.
Disney Dreamlight Valley will be available to play on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC next year, but Disney is set to run an Early Access period this summer. Gaining access will require either purchasing a Founder's Pack or having an active Xbox Game Pass membership. Pricing for the Founder's Pack hasn't been revealed yet.
If you cross Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons you've got a pretty good idea of the gameplay Disney and Gameloft are planning. How successful it turns out to be will ultimately rest on the number of microtransactions and subscriptions Disney tries to cram into the experience.
