Destiny 2’s player count has fallen to a historic low on Steam.
According to Steam Charts (via Forbes), over the last 30 days the game’s average player count was 34,328 and its peak player count was 59,076.
Both figures are all-time lows since the PC version of Destiny 2 transferred to Steam in October 2019.
While it might not be unexpected for a game’s player count to be declining in its seventh year on the market—Destiny 2 was originally released in September 2017—Bungie’s shooter actually hit its highest ever concurrent player count (316,651) when its Lightfall expansion launched in February.
It was confirmed last month that Bungie was thelatest Sony Interactive Entertainment studio to be hit with layoffs.
Bloomberg later claimed roughly 8% of the studio’s workforce was affected by the job cuts and that the upcoming Destiny expansion, The Final Shape, as well as shooter Marathon, had been internally delayed.
In October, Bungie’s staff were reportedly warned that revenue was running at around 45% below projections for the year, which chief executive officer Pete Parsons attributed to poor player retention for Destiny 2.
It’s claimed that staff were told the game’s next expansion, The Final Shape, was being delayed from February 2024 to June, to give the studio more time to improve it.
Bungie hasn’t officially announced a delay for The Final Shape, which is still officially scheduled for release on February 27, 2024.
The studio recently announced plans to replace the game’s current seasonal structure with an episodic one following The Final Shape’s release.
