DC Universe Online’s Executive Producer, Andre Emerson, has outlined some big changes for the MMORPG, including overhauls, improvements, multi-arc narrative stories (goodbye, Episodes), better Renown gains, and much more.
The vision for what's to come for DCUO includes an end to new Episodes, which are themed and generally self-contained. Episodes and Chapters will still be available in game under Story Arcs.
Emerson says, “We have big plans to release multi-part narratives, highly focused on delivering compelling and compassionate storytelling. These types of stories aren’t meant to be episodic,” so big new content updates will include Story Arcs, made up of Chapters. This decision also leans into the comic book inspirations more.
Expect the first new Story Arc sometime in late January, the first part of a four-part mystery. The new letter includes a couple of first peeks at art from the new content. Also changing is the Event system, which will help them launch Campaign 2025, offering multiple events to complete through the year and cumulative prizes later on.
Renown is getting changes to how you’ll earn it and how much you earn. This will depend on the difficulty setting. This means you might tune down the difficulty a bit and still earn Renown, but more slowly over time. It still gets you possible Elite gear and even some engagement into the Affinity Mods system, so new or less-experienced players still get access. If you are a veteran player who is up for any challenge, defeating new Elite bosses gets you R&D recipes that will let you craft Elite weapons, as well as utility belt items, neck items, and rings. These items will come with Feats as well.
The team is also considering a number of other improvements and potential new features. They’re exploring things like heroe and villain cross-faction leagues, private customizable queues, and potential gameplay content around summonable entities like pets and sidekicks.
