Hal Jordan may be one of the greatest Green Lanterns in the DC Universe, but waiting in the wings to take over for him is Nightwing. A brief brush with death shows the hero all the potential replacements who could take Jordan's ring if he passes on, and the former Boy Wonder is the most notable candidate.
The Green Lantern Corps' most powerful tool is, of course, the Power Ring and it endows its users with the abilities to fly, traverse the cosmos and create virtually anything with their minds. The rings are programmed to seek out those who possess great willpower and the ability to overcome great fear, two vital aspects of operating a Power Ring. Upon the death of an officer, they locate the nearest suitable replacement and transport them to the Corps' base of operations for training and induction into the organization.

Despite being the Green Lantern Corps' star officer, Hal Jordan came close to meeting his maker in Action Comics #642. The story «Where There is a Will...! Chapter III: The Summoning» by Elliot S. Maggin, Curt Swan Jim Aparo and Jim Mooney shows Jordan's ring scanning the Earth for potential ringbearers after Jordan is shot dead after discovering a rogue military operation. A mysterious green light begins absorbing heroic figures from around the globe, including Jordan's fellow Corpsman Guy Gardner. But one particular individual among the collective is Dick Grayson, who was picked up while in the middle of some business as Nightwing. With so many people gathered, Jordan is given the chance to pick his successor before he moves onto the afterlife.
