During his bloody ascent to the position of DC Comics’s new Vampire King, Nightwingcommits an array of unspeakable crimes; however, a small detail on his redesigned costume hints that redemption could somehow be in the cards for Dick Grayson.
DC vs. Vampires — Hunters #1, written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Neil Googe, is a direct spinoff of DC’s limited series DC vs. Vampires. That series sees Dick Grayson, a long-standing beacon of hope and compassion, transform into the king of all vampires. He finally reveals himself to the rest of the Bat-Family while taking them out in the process, gleefully killing Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Batman himself. The only Bat-Family members left standing are Damian Wayne, whom Dick turns into a vampire, and the ever-reliable Alfred Pennyworth.

The two remaining members of the Bat-Family form a resistance against the vampire regime in DC vs. Vampires — Hunters #1, and Damian and Martian Manhunter visit the former Nightwing in his throne room atop Wayne Tower. Dick Grayson’s new Vampire King costume is a total redesign of his previous costume, save for one small detail: he continues to don a small, blood-red Nightwing symbol directly over his heart. The continuation of this symbol alongside the complete redesign of everything else suggests two meanings. It’s possible that Dick’s true self is still there underneath all the corruption, and the tiny symbol is his way of directing the remaining heroes to stake him through the heart.
