The consistent trust Batman places in his ally Nightwing may be heartwarming, but it could also be a creating a deadly blind spot. Though Dick Grayson is practically a paragon of virtue across the multiverse, several bad apple variants have shown Bruce Wayne's faith may be a critical flaw.
Few members of the Bat-Family have earned the confidence from Batman that Dick has achieved. As his first Robin, Grayson fought by Bruce’s side longer than most and while the two may have had their differences, they know one another inside and out. Dick has proven his reliability by stepping up not once, but twice filling in for Batman when Bruce wasn’t able to. Batman has recognized how good of a hero Dick has become and has often considered his former ward his greatest success.

Despite Bruce's affection for his former partner, the Dark Knight almost never sees it coming when Dick betrays him in alternate universes. The grim horror tales DC vs. Vampires and DCeased both feature Batman being brutally murdered by Nightwing when the former Boy Wonder turns to the dark side. What's so shocking about these kills isn't so much that they occur, but that Dick Grayson of all people is the one committing them. Not only is he one of the friendliest heroes in the DCU, his reputation for being a goodie-goodie spans across the entire multiverse. In Nightwing #9 by Tim Seeley and Marcio Takara, the titular hero is let in on a little secret about his otherworldly doppelgangers from a Superman variant. Nearly every version of Nightwing has a similar moral code that remains consistent no matter the Earth.
