Alicia Silverstone's Batgirl suit originally had nipples like the other heroes in Batman & Robin. The 1997 movie is the fourth installment in the original Batman franchise, with George Clooney taking over the role of Bruce Wayne from Batman Forever star Val Kilmer. Chris O'Donnell returned as Robin, while Silverstone debuted as Batgirl. Batman & Robin was a critical and commercial failure, and the costumes have been judged particularly harshly. Both the Batman and Robin suits showcased prominent nipples, a feature also present in Batman Forever, though slightly more subtly there.
Recently, costume sculptor Jose Fernandez shared that he added the nipples to Kilmer's Batsuit, basing it on the way costumes look in the comic books, as well as Roman armor. According to Fernandez, director Joel Schumacher asked that the nipples be highlighted more in Batman & Robin. Batman and Batman Returns director Tim Burton separately weighed in on the costume controversy, saying in part, "You complain about me, I’m too weird, I’m too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume? Go f*ck yourself."

In his interview with MEL, Fernandez reveals that Silverstone's original Batgirl suit in Batman & Robin had nipples like the two title heroes' costumes. However, Fernandez says the design went too far and was ultimately pulled back. Read his full quote below:
